Henrietta Lacks – A Brush with Immortality
This International Woman’s Day please join us for a panel discussion as we talk about the legacy of Henrietta Lacks.

Henrietta Lacks was a Black African American Women from who tumour cells were taken, without consent, that went on to become the first human immortal cell line, called HeLa. Over the past 70 years, HeLa cells have been used in countless scientific and medical discoveries which has led to Henrietta being known as “the mother of modern medicine”. These cells continue to be used today.

Panellists:
Helen Wilson-Roe. Helen is a local artist, who has been studying Henrietta and the Lacks family for over 20 years for her ‘A Brush with Immortality’ exhibition. Cllr Cleo Lake. Cleo is a former Lord Mayor of Bristol and, during her time in office, replaced a portrait of a slave trader with a portrait of Henrietta Lacks. Portraits of Cleo and Henrietta, both painted by Helen, are currently on display outside the Great Hall in Wills Memorial Building.

Dr Maninder Ahluwalia. Maninder is a Senior Lecturer in Biomedical Sciences in Cardiff Metropolitan University. The main research theme of Maninder’s lab is to explore the gene-diet interactions and to investigate the mechanism of action of health promoting properties of natural dietary compound.

Rider Shafique. Rider is a lyricist, poet, MC and recording artist who set up the I-DENTITY charity, which provides books written by Black authors for children, for free, in the South West of England.

Dr Caroline McKinnon is the Student Careers and Outreach Director in the School of Biochemistry at Bristol. She is part of the Faculty of Life Sciences Inclusive Research Collective.
